Where are they found?
Mosquitoes are found outside near free standing water. They need the water and/or plants to lay their eggs and reproduce. Not only are those typical forms of water prime breeding grounds, but also puddles from rain, standing water within potted plants, trash cans, or watering cans.
When are you most likely to get bitten?
Within Central Massachusetts you can get bitten by a mosquito at any time of the day. Particularly the most common time that they will be most active is before sunset, all through the night up until sunrise. Mass.gov answers the question most people ask as to which mosquitoes bite. "Only female mosquitoes bite to suck blood. The female uses the blood to make eggs. Male and female mosquitoes use plant nectars and fruit juices as their main source of food."
Why are mosquitoes an issue in Massachusetts?
The biggest reason that mosquitoes are a problem in central Massachusetts is that they can carry and transmit viruses and germs which can lead to illnesses. "In Massachusetts, the diseases linked to mosquitoes are West Nile virus (WNV) and eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus." (mass.gov). Not all mosquitoes carry viruses, in fact, most will just cause itching and skin irritation to most people and animals.
